About the course

Do you want to become a pro at story structure?

’Course you do. After all, it’s the key to writing better stories—faster.

Here’s how it works:

With story structure, you have markers to write toward. You don’t have to spend your (limited) writing time wondering where to take your story…or asking yourself, What happens next?

You’ll know.

Plus, you won’t have to build structure into your novel after the fact. This should reduce your revision time. Significantly.

In a nutshell, you save time AS you…

’Course you do. After all, it’s the key to writing better stories—faster.

Here’s how it works:

With story structure, you have markers to write toward. You don’t have to spend your (limited) writing time wondering where to take your story…or asking yourself, What happens next?

You’ll know.

Plus, you won’t have to build structure into your novel after the fact. This should reduce your revision time. Significantly.

In a nutshell, you save time AS you write and AFTER you write. Cool, right?

Wait, ’cause it gets better.

Story structure generates the up-and-down rhythm—the roller-coaster ride—that keeps readers engaged from beginning to end of your novel.

As Chris Vogler put it in The Writer’s Journey, “The structure of a story acts like a pump to increase the involvement of the audience. Good structure works by alternately lowering and raising the hero’s fortunes and, with them, the audience’s emotions.”

That’s why it’s critical to master story structure. And with Smarter Story Structure, you can do so as quickly and painlessly as possible.

You see, to create this course, I took the best takeaways from the Story Structure Essentials series (these are “deep dive” writing guides that, together, total over 250,000 words)—as well as from Story Stakes and Sparkling Story Drafts—and condensed them into 5 modules that you can binge on in a weekend.

Here’s a sampling of what you’ll receive when you purchase the course:

• page numbers to place your inciting incident so you know your novel doesn’t start too slowly (and how to compensate when your inciting incident is delayed)
• a surefire way to detect whether your story only gains traction halfway through (a common problem)
• tips on how to execute the “all is lost” moment with skill
• instructional videos on how to craft an epically long climax that will dazzle readers (rather than fizzling out and delivering a wimpy ending)
• advice on how to increase the odds that your resolution will net you more sales in the future

PRAISE FOR SMARTER STORY STRUCTURE

RUPERT COLLEY (author of The Woman on the Train and founder of the bestselling History in an Hour series – published by HarperCollins): “Smarter Story Structure provides a solid foundation and, at the same time, provides so many suggestions and ‘tricks’ that can take a WIP up a level or two. I enjoyed the course very much, and will refer back to it as I work on my current WIP.”

ARIADNE S: “I love, love, love this course – it’s well structured and well presented – with great knowledge, plus room to ‘digest.’ It will be such a time (and mistake) saver.”

JAMES CAFFERY (Quarterfinalist in the WeScreenPlay Pilot Competition – 2018): “This course, Smarter Story Structure, is fantastic & spot-on. For me, it’s been a series of mini-light bulbs popping off along the way, and I can’t thank H. R. D’Costa enough for her insight and clarity.”

Lesson Name & What’s Included
Orientation
In this orientation lesson, we’ll discuss: • why story structure is so powerful • how structure is defined in this course • an overview of the course lessons • how to access all the resources in the course
By the end of Module 1, you should be able to: • easily figure out a first-act break for your novel (even when your plot is really complex)* • optimize your first-act break so it’s as ideal as possible • use multiple methods to entice readers to give your story a chance • describe 4 ways the first-act break commonly plays out (which is helpful in case you get stuck) • determine a potential inciting incident for your novel in 3 easy steps (or use my cheat sheet, which makes it even easier!) • position the inciting incident in the best place to solve the problem of sluggish pacing * By the way, the tip you’ll find here can help you focus on what’s important when you need to summarize the plot of your novel in a book description or query letter.
By the end of Module 2, you should be able to: • make the middle of your novel more manageable to write (and more engaging to read!) • liven up the middle of any (a) plot involving a romance, buddy-cop duo, or road trip or (b) story in the action, thriller, or mystery genres • fix a story that’s a “slow starter” (note: this kind of slow-paced beginning is not caused by a delayed inciting incident) • test-drive a midpoint that’ll make a huge storytelling problem (besides monotony) go away • end Act Two without flailing in the dark, wondering what happens next • avoid succumbing to the instinct that can be fatal to give into when you’re trying to write a gripping story middle • implement a neat trick (used in a Colleen Hoover new-adult romance and the heist film Fast Five) to make the end of the second act more emotionally intense
By the end of Module 3, you should be able to: • develop the proper mindset to craft a successful story ending • prevent readers from leaving your novel in a rage • understand how the climax and resolution help you convey theme (or character arc) • increase the odds that your story ending will make you more money • evaluate whether a cliffhanger ending is fair to your readers • avoid a big mistake writers tend to make regarding the stakes • create an epically long climax that’s sure to delight readers and leave them begging for more • prevent the resolution of your story from turning into deadweight • deploy 2 ninja-level tactics that’ll make your name synonymous with crazy-good storyteller
By the end of Module 4, you should be able to: • smoothly ease readers into your novel • use the closing image to make your characters seem more three-dimensional • entice readers to buy the next novel in your series (without resorting to a cliffhanger!) • flesh out gaping holes in the middle of your story
By the end of Module 5, you should be able to: • explain how the essential plot points connect together • solve storytelling headaches with both the first-act break and the second-act break • improve the chances that your story not only has the right length but is also a good read • gauge how flexible you can be with the act breaks • avoid a major pitfall of using three-act structure • take three-act structure to a whole new level with a special structural enhancement • build the structure of your next novel or screenplay—step by step—using the principles discussed in this course (and one super-awesome workbook)
This is where you’ll find these valuable resources: • Three-Act Structure Workbook • Audio Companion Workbook • Answer Keys • Recommended Reading, Etc.

Instructor

A graduate of Brown University, H. R. D’Costa almost became a lawyer—twice—because it seemed easier and less scary than doing what she really wanted: to be a writer. That’s why she’s on a mission to create mindset and plotting resources that will enable novelists and screenwriters to hold fast to their writing dreams…even when life tells them to let go. For inspiration; practical writing tips; and her popular resource, the Ultimate Story Structure Worksheet (which has been downloaded over 37,000 times by writers from around the world), she invites you to visit her website scribemeetsworld.com.
