Sorry to hear of your bad Fiverr experience. There are many of us legit sellers on there. I strongly urge anyone considering Fiverr to interview your prospective seller via the messaging system, including sending images, to get an exact quote before ever ordering the gig. Marwhitt, book design layout and ebook formatting. No Bull Just Publishing.

I got way too many inquiries on Upwork from scammers; I have never had a problem on Fiverr. As you said, it is obvious to spot the international ESL people; it is just as obvious who the true American English speakers are.

After my bait and switch experience below and mutually agreeing to cancel so I could resubmit, I found out there is no way to cancel. After filling out the form to cancel so I could resubmit, there are only Error messages where the form won’t send. Over and Over and Over, even though every field is filled out completely. Then, if you want to contact customer service for resolution???? You get sent back to the same damn form. do not waste your time for $30 bait and switch. Just use a reputable service. I’ll be posting this on every blogger and author help Website I can find. I have far more than $30 to spend on my book cover. What I do not have is time to waste.

I was pretty sure going in that they would try to upsell me and that was fine. My cover ideas were a bit unique/complex so It is worth it to see some ideas before I invest more money in a finished product. If you’re serious about writing and selling as a profession, you should be serious about investing in your craft and product. So I chose someone who had already designed book covers similar to what I need. His gallery example I cited included an eBook cover, DVD, CD cover, 2D from scratch and 3D (which is only for a website as far as I can tell. I chose the PREMIUM package going in (because It is ridiculous to think of getting anything worthwhile for $10).I sent a PDF with notes, sample covers, sample fonts, directions and my own mockup (that I clearly stated I was not married to, but just to get the overall concept across). Immediate response of “thanks, have all I need.” On day three of the four-day turnaround the designer said what I want requires a “custom” design and included a link. Cost for what I want? $450! Quite a jump from $32, yes? Offshore. India. My question: “So you use a gallery sample under you $30 price That is what I want, but I can only get your example by paying $450?” No answer. Classic bait and switch. So I said, “Just provide me with whatever you WOULD DO for the original premium price (because I might use it on my Website and anything a designer would do should be better than my crappy mockup). So he asked me to “update.” There is no “update.” So he said I need to cancel and resubmit. But at this point there are only links to “accept” or “request a revision.” I’m sticking with this, just because I’m now curious to see what paying the “PREMIUM” price will get me. So far It is been a big waste of 5+ days of my time. In the meantime, I’m moving to 99 Designs and setting up a competition for $299-$499. It worked great when I did my business card logo that way. We’ll see.

Quite a risk though. Prepare for major disappointment. 🙂 How about authors skip a few Starbucks and get a good designer instead hehehe Logo design and illustrators on Fiverr are good though. That’s about it.

Personally I think authors should only go to Fiverr for non-fiction books. Fantasy, Horror? Good covers for those genre will definitely not cost $5. 🙂

But, it’s still a better option than authors designing their own when they know squat about designing. There are enough bad covers like that around to realize that it’s a real phenomena. 🙂 Give the Fiverr designer the image to use and a sample of the font styles, and maybe, they’d get something close to what they have in mind. For the more discerning author, there are cover designers that design beautiful covers for less than $100. The option is not just either Fiverr or Derek Murphy or Josh Jadon. And then, there are the premade covers store. Finding a good one is gold to someone who doesn’t know how to design their own. Yes, there’s a big chance the images on the cover may have been used by others, but still better than risking $5 on Fiverr. At least you can see what you’re getting. More than the money wasted, it can sap an author’s enthusiasm a little when they get less than what they were hoping for – at the stage when they’re excited about the book.
As always, enjoyed reading your article, Dave. I have a new book coming out and Kindlepreneur will definitely be recommended. Keep fighting the dragons.

No matter how great they are, if someone focuses on period romances or business how-to books, my zombie books will probably be a stretch for them. I also sometimes do more than one gig. I have one artist create the artwork, if they have an unusual style that I like, and another can take that image and turn it into a book cover. The Cubmastering book (below) is an example of that.

The pink Constitution cover is one I had done but ultimately didn’t like the pink background. The original image was of a sunset, and the artist mangled it. BUT, I did like the text layout and fading she used, so I kept those and changed the image and colors. I am pleased with the final product.

I think for my rocket ship, I found something similar, bought the rights, and then made some major changes. The Astronaut? No. I knew I wanted a flat image for that guy, found a real astronaut picture, found the right artist with the style I wanted on Fiverr and contracted him to make it…well actually I contracted 5+ and choose the one that delivered the astronaut I liked the best.
