Since they offer a service, this begs for trademarking the images used by the company.

Do you have suggested links or a blog piece on trademarking?

BTW: Good, solid content and suggested strategies on starting a publishing company. I appreciated your work; you are my “pathfinder!”

It shouldn’t be.

I created an LLC for my coaching business and plan on publishing under the same LLC vs having two companies. That being said, my business isn’t structured as a publishing house. Will that be an issue?

I appreciate the wealth of knowledge in this article. I do have one question though.

If someone creates a new llc for their publishing company does that mean when creating the new kdp account we can avoid using our own name and instead only use the business name?

Thanks

Yup – unpublish and republish. Although a cleaner way is to switch the current account info to the new account, keeping all your books there, like it sounds like you did. As for legal, I made mark in my LLC book that the ‘assets’ were transferred over to the company. (Again, not legal advice nor am I a lawyer).

I’ve changed everything in my personal account to my business tax and business info, in the meantime, both on KDP, Smashwords, and D2D.

Is there a legal way to transfer ownership of books from ME to my business?

Thank you so much. I will definitely have to go to the LLC route. Thankfully, I have a bit of reading to do before I have to get busy with that.

I already have my company name, domain name, website, and logo, I just need to handle all the legalities of it.

Super informative! Can you share more about how to “set up a virtual office” or how to find “a registered agent”?

How did you go about selecting which virtual address company to use? I started to do the Post Office route, but after showing up there the other day and not having the right ID (though I DID have the ones the guy on the phone SAID I would need), I’m a bit flummoxed. There are so many virtual companies – and of course I want to select the perfect one. Thank you! Olivia

My best friend and I started co-authoring and I found out from my tax lady that since I live in California and would have been issuing a 1099 for my friend as we shared the royalties, she warned us against the the new tax policies in California and how 1099s are starting to send up a red flag for companies. Apparently, some organizations are using 1099s to dodge having to pay employee payroll taxes and benefits by contracting people. So instead of just paying each other the royalties and get flagged, we decided to create an LLC in the state of Indiana to avoid the scrutiny. Legitimate, of course, but just a note here to let other authors know to be sure to check on tax situations if you’re working with other people in or out of state.
