It’s all to easy to start a memoir with the first inciting incident in childhood, and then catalogue the rest of your life. Instead, my advice is to distil it into the best bits, and then be sure there are highs and lows, the occasional cliff-hanger, changes of pace, and a through-line story arc resulting in the changes the character (you!) experienced. Plotting it like a novel doesn’t mean making stuff up – it just means varying the focus, length of time you devote to a sequence and the pace of your writing. Otherwise, you risk creating one long diary entry!

My best tip for marketing: find another author with a similar tale, and talk to them about cross promotion. I was lucky enough to be publishing around the same time as another young bloke with a ridiculous story to tell – we agreed to put ads for each other in the backs of all our books, and over the years we’ve sold thousands of each other’s books this way!
