You need to have the rights to it or it needs to be a public domain in order make an audiobook.

I’d like to help him set up an audio book account, but I’ve also been looking to do more audio book readings for others…does your company hire voice-artists by any chance? I realize companies like voice123 are a commun collection for voice-artists…just curious if you have a branch of this too.

Thanks for the tons of information. I have a series of pre school children’s books that will be published soon and available as an e book and paper back.

Each story is no more than 500 words and I would love to one of the books as an audio freebie book but would like to hire a narrator and have the recording done for me. Can you point me in the right direction or is it a service you would provide.

Paul, that’s a great question. Unfortunately with ACX they control the release date–it’ll just be approved and sent to retail. That said, you can do a soft launch with your book and get it up and on ACX and just formally launch the audiobook to your list whenever you feel like.

Hi Gus. We get this question a LOT and actually have some excellent free resources (including my own book) on how to record your own audiobook. I think you’d do a great job as long as your setup was optimized. A good estimate is you can save about 50% of the costs by recording yourself and then outsourcing the engineering. Michele, that’s a great question! Unfortunately ACX is an Amazon company so you have to use them to get your book on Amazon and Audible, but there might be a chance to get it on iTunes (though unlikely). They’re the 800 lb gorilla in the room…
